I made this memorial in honor of our faithful Keshond companion, who gave my wife and I many years of affection.
The memorial is made from curly hard maple and black walnut.
I wood burned Meisha's image along with her name and dates into the curly maple, using a photo of her as a reference.
R.I.P Meisha, you will always be remembered!
This desk bookstand is made out of Black Cherry and Curly Soft Maple.
The book stand is based on one in a copper engraving done by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) in 1514 of "St. Jerome in his Study".
Plans for this desk book stand can be found in the June 2007 issue of Woodwork Magazine in an article by Cliff Clark.
Curly maple was used as trim around the cherry book stand to contrast with the deep red color of the cherry wood.
I handcarved the bevels on the legs and attached them to the top with sliding dovetails instead of dowels.
The desk bookstand was finished with Minwax Antique Oil and Johnson's Paste Wax.
Search online, Albrecht Dürer "St. Jerome in his Study" for a look at this bookstand in his copper engraving.
Chest made out of black cherry, curly maple drawers with cherry face, and chest bottom lined with aromatic red cedar.
Chest and drawer dovetails were hand-cut.

Chest has 3 working drawers, soft close lid supports, and lid lock.
Brass hinges and handles.

The plans for this chest can be found in Woodsmith Magazine #20. I took the liberty to make some changes so my version isn't an exact copy.
A very heavy table made from a 2" thick slab cut from a large cherry crotch. I cut the slab with a chainsaw mill. The shelf is 1 1/2" thick natural edged cherry flitch.
Dimensions: 24"w x 18"h x 36"L
I used walnut tusk tenons so the table can be easily taken apart. I also used walnut for the feet.

Tables made from 1" thick cherry crotch flitches. Black walnut was used as an accent. Tapered cherry legs.
These tables were made to go with the Cherry coffee table as a set.
Curly soft maple was used as drawer sides. Dovetails were hand cut.

A handy storage cabinet made out of Black Cherry.

Black Cherry and Black Walnut Crotch was used in making this cabinet.

Side doors swing open and feature necklace hangers.
The top compartment is for rings.
The drawers have various compartments and dividers.
Rich red velvet fabric was used throughout.
Instead of a mirror on the inside of the lid, I made a rose marquetry out of cherry, black walnut crotch, tulip, and white oak veneer. I then inlayed the marquetry into the cherry lid.
Here is my version of an 1840 era Shaker Wall Clock.
The clock case is made out of black cherry. The door panel is a bookmatched piece of spotted aspen from the State of Michigan that a friend had sent me.
Finish: Hand-rubbed MinWax Antique Oil and Johnson's Paste Wax.
Dimensions: 4"d x 11"w x 37¾"h
Traditionally, the clock movement would be a wind-up with a pendulum. Instead, I opted for a quartz movement without a pendulum so I could incorporate two nic-nac shelves in the pendulum compartment, just to be different.
Here is a close-up of a baby mountain lion that I woodburned into the inside door panel. I wanted to do something artistically that would tie in with the spots in the aspen wood.
Also, since this is a rendition of a Shaker clock, I thought that a quote from Ann Lee (the founder of the Shaker movement) would be fitting.
I made this box from resawn 3/8" thick white oak. The grain wraps around all 4 corners. The corners were joined by hand-cut dovetails.
The lid has a curly sugar maple panel to contrast with the straight grain of the white oak. The lift is black walnut.
Finish: Hand-rubbed MinWax Satin Polyurethane and Johnson's Paste Wax.
Dimensions: 3½"h x 8"d x 14"L
I used Busso solid brass jewelry box hinges. These hinges feature 105° lid stop.
The inside of the box has a sliding upper tray made from curly soft maple. The bottom compartment is divided into quarters with curly soft maple dividers.
Blue velvet fabric was used to line the tray and box bottom.
Here is a close-up showing the beautiful grain of the curly maple in the jewelry box lid. Also, you can see the curl in the tray dividers.
I used walnut splines to strengthen the tray's mitered corners.
This desk was made out of black cherry (surprized?) and 2 black walnut accent strips in the desk top.
The drawers roll on glides so they will always be easy to open and close.
Finish: Hand-rubbed MinWax Antique Oil and Johnson's Paste Wax.
Dimensions: 30"h x 18"d x 40"w
I used black cherry, curly maple, and tap hole maple for the door panels (if you ever wondered what tapping maple trees for maple syrup does to the wood, here is your chance to see the results. 3/8" diameter holes and stained/punky wood)to make this cabinet.
Finish: Hand-rubbed MinWax Satin Polyurethane and Johnson's Paste Wax.
Dimensions: 27"h x 20"d x 45½"w
Lots of work space when you open up the top. The sewing machine sits on a mechanical lift that can be lowered or raised as needed. Also, there is a compartment to store a serger and the top folds out to set the serger on.
Plenty of drawer space for notions.
Lockable wheels make moving this cabinet a breeze.
Plans for this cabinet can be found in Wood Magazine Jan.1997 Issue 94.
Here is a great way to display your books. After reading a how to article in a woodworking magazine, I was inspired to make one too.
I made my version of the bookend out of black walnut, butternut, cherry, red oak, hard maple dowel for the screw.
The screw actually works and its assembly slides in a dovetailed slot.
Finish: Hand-rubbed MinWax Antique Oil and Johnson's Paste Wax.
The plans for this project can be found in American Woodworker Magazine, Feb. 1998, Issue #64, "Bar Clamp Bookends by Mike Jagielo".
This shelf is made out of butternut. I cut the curves and heart shaped holes into a 1" thick board. I then resawed the board in half and opened it up like a book.
The 3 shelves are made out of quartered sawn butternut.
Finish: MinWax Antique Oil and Johnson's Paste Wax.
Dimensions: 12"w x 24"h
Here is one of the many boxes that I make. This one was made for storing a standard size bible.

The inside of the box has blue flocking and blue satin velvet on the bottom.
Finish: MinWax Satin Polyurethane and Johnson's Paste Wax.
